Each one of team members play an important role in keeping this well-oiled machine, not only running but churning out brilliant ideas and projects on the reg. In our ‘meet the team’ series, we give you a little more insight into the talented folk that make up our Smack Bang family.
My name is Tess and my mum would say I’m her best creation but I think I’m just a product of a strong, creative and wonderful woman. The first thing I do when I wake up is make myself a cup of hot chai and sit with my kelpie on the lounge as we watch the sunrise, and at the end of the day I fall into bed with a full belly, tired eyes and probably a few million ideas swirling around in my head. My favourite thing about my job is I get to create my own mini utopia where I set the rules and decide how I want to play the game.
What do you do at SBD? I’m the founder, creative director and head plant whisperer. What that title means changes from day to day, but I essentially work across every aspect of the business that needs my attention and input most. Sometimes it’s throwing myself headlong into marketing ideation, other days it’s meeting with new clients or brainstorming with my team. Some days it’s dreaming up plans for the future of our biz and other days it’s discussing what we could be doing better from our past. But mostly, it’s just ordering doughnuts for the team and ensuring that each one of our 100 plants have just the right amount of water, sunshine and sweet nothings whispered to them to keep them healthy, alive and at the top of their game.
If you weren’t doing that, what would you be doing? I’m an all or nothing person, so I reckon if I wasn’t living this life, with my 4 businesses and a million things on the go, I’d probably be one of those people who live off the grid and spend their days milking a goat, stroking their chin and talking to the clouds.
You’re on a desert island and can only listen to one album for the rest of your days. Which one is it? Fleetwood Mac, Rumours. Because, Stevie. Duh.
What’s your weekend ritual? It almost always involves the beach. Swimming in it, lounging on it, sipping beer at it, and then dragging it home in our towels to later vacuum it up and watch the sun set over it.
What’s the best choice you’ve made so far in life? I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to make so many, but I think kissing a particular random dude at the age of 18 at a music festival is up there on the list. (For the record he turned out to be alright and nearly ten years later he’s still my most favourite human I’ve ever met).
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? I’d love to be able to freeze time. So that I could enjoy those sweet moments for longer, the moments that pass you by and you wish you could have that hug again, or hold that kiss a little longer, or see that smile once more. But mostly, just so that I could freeze time for a few 100 years and catch up on all the bloody work I need to.
Coffee order? Almond latte with a side of croissant and sunshine.
If you weren’t living in Sydney, where would you choose and why? I recently did make the choice! My partner and I packed up our house, our bajillion belongings and our psycho ball of fur with four legs and headed south. We now call Coledale home and couldn’t be happier. The air down here is fresh, the people are friendly and the bottle-o is 100m from my house. We scored ourselves a sweet little fixer-upper and spend our weekends between the beach and the paint brushes.
