Imagine waking up, going for a run, having a dip in the ocean, popping into the farmer’s market then walking into Comma, the massage bar in Byron Bay, that you run (complete with nine staff!) seven days a week. This blissful Byron lifestyle might sound like a bit of dream, but don’t get us wrong, Comma’s founder, Susie, has worked hard to get here. The space is modern, calming and uniquely Australian, and in the four short months it’s been open for business, the locals have embraced Comma with open arms. We pop in and have a chat to Susie, and yes, it was pretty hard to leave.

  1. TELL US SOMETHING QUIRKY ABOUT YOU:
I’m a bit of an open book, but perhaps I had a Social Media Agency in Sydney for five years before Comma. It was realising that I didn’t want to live my life via a social feed for much longer that inspired the change. That, and my ears are pinned back. People always have a good LOL about that.

  2. WHERE WHOULD WE FIND YOU EACH MORNING?
Running the lighthouse, jumping in the ocean and inhaling a large coffee. The Byron cliche got me good!

  1. WE LOVE THE CONCEPT BEHIND COMMA. HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS IDEA COME ABOUT?
Comma, as the name implies stands for taking a moment to breathe and pause. I was the antithesis of this before starting and was just one million miles an hour, all the time. It was too much and I soon realised I wasn’t the only one – we’re all doing everything, all the time. I wanted to create a space where people can just take a moment for themselves, even if it’s for an hour where they have no distractions, no phones etc. I believe experiences should be memorable, I want everyone walking out of Comma to feel like they’ve been genuinely rewired (for the better!) And, who doesn’t love a massage?

  2. YOUR SPACE IS SO COLLABORATIVE. WHAT WERE SOME KEY THINGS YOU WERE LOOKING FOR WHEN GETTING A BRAND INVOLVED IN YOUR SPACE?
I was trying to create a space where everything was sourced locally, Australian made and owned where possible. I think it’s really important to support those like-minded people (especially small biz) that are doing incredible things. It’s especially nice when you’re dealing with the business owners as they are equally as supportive, Byron Bay has been phenomenal in this sense.

  1. LIFE MOTTO?
Just give it a crack, if it doesn’t work out you will have learnt something along the way.

  2. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Where do I start? A little bit of everything really. I just love how people are so willing to give anything a go these days, there are so many inspiring people that you can learn about so easily. Whether it’s via a podcast, a blog post, a random Instagram account, talking to someone in the street. Most people have an interesting story that can inspire in some way.

  1. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF CREATING THIS BEAUTIFUL SPACE?
Definitely the people I’ve meet along the way.

  2. ANY PLAYLISTS THAT ARE A ‘MUST’ IN YOUR EVERYDAY?
Despite spending most of my time at Comma where the music is relaxing, I’m usually hip-hop at all hours of the day. Atelier Dore has a bunch of different playlists on her Spotify, I’d highly recommend giving them a listen! And KCRW radio in LA is always nice to stream.

  3. DESCRIBE COMMA IN THREE WORDS:
    Take your time.

  4. FAVOURITE THING TO DO AT THE END OF THE WEEK?
Dinner at home with friends. Good food, good music, good wine and laughter.

  5. ANY EXCITING THINGS IN THE PIPELINE? ONLY IF IT’S NOT A SECRET OF COURSE…
I’ve been working on creating Comma products. I want people to experience Comma even if they can’t make it into our space, whether that be through a candle, facial mist, a smell. Anything that represents relaxation and products that require taking some time out for yourself.
