Usually my days are spent at a workbench, be that of the jewellery making kind with fine tip diamond burs and needlepoint files or the sculpture making kind with chisels and hammers but lately, I have been taking a well-earned break while I settle into my new digs. I recently made the move interstate to Sydney from sunny Q-L-D. In my first week, I got lost driving from Bondi to Bronte. My phone was dead so it took me 45 minutes to get home… insert blonde face palm emoji! Since the move, I have been repurposing an old 60’s photography studio into my new jewellery making and sculpting studio, I’m now on a first name basis with the legends at my local Bunnings – which is a big win, I love Bunnings! It’s taking time to get the studio up and running, getting my tools, equipment, machinery, and furniture sent down and trying to create an inspiring space, so I’ve had a lot of time away from my workbench. Sort of like a forced holiday which has given me plenty of time to find all my new favourite haunts. Cafe’s, beaches, bars and galleries etcetera. I literally live above the Bronte pools and moved into a dream house with my pup Hugo, so we are two annoyingly happy blondes bouncing around town trying every Tumeric latte on offer.
MASSAGES My boyfriend just introduced me to a little Thai place in Surry Hills where the ladies really work your knots, it’s not really relaxing, it actually really hurts but I love it because my neck and shoulders are always tight from making jewellery and sculpting so having someone stand on my back or dig into me with their elbows is incredibly relieving.
SCULPTING It is a new practice for me which I began earlier this year. It is a new way for me to express myself, originally born of a need to create an interesting display for my jewellery at my MBFWA debut in May, which has now led me to be represented by Jerico Contemporary. My first show opens February 8th, 2018 and right now I am really leaning into the process, expanding the variety of stone and tools I am using and putting my heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into it. I love the meditative quality, technical variety and physicality, it is incredibly cathartic.
STONE MASONS WHI GET THE JOB DONE Last week I made a new friend named Mark, a stone mason from North Sydney who spoke to me on the phone for over an hour to make absolutely sure he was cutting the most perfectly suited sandstone for my exhibition. What a dude, I love it when people love what they do so much that they get excited to help others, it’s how I feel about my work, so yeah Mark, thanks for making my day.
PILATES AT BODYMINDLIFE I’m addicted. I used to climb a mountain (Mt. Coolum, where I am from) every day to watch either the sunrise or the sunset, but struggle to get that same burn on the ‘Bronte 2 Bondi’ walk with nobody understanding the whole ‘stay left’ rule. Insert Pilates, one of my instructors really pushes me too, I like a challenge so I like her.
CROISSANTS FROM IGGY’S Are you kidding me? These things are outta control, melt in your mouth and enter another universe kind of good! Annnnd they also force me to attend Pilates. The circle of life hey??!!
ELLERYLAND BOUTIQUE GALLERY IN COLLAB WITH CHINA HEIGHTS
Ellery is now collaborating with China Heights Gallery to showcase a different artist each month. The week before last I attended the Annalisa Ferraris exhibition at the Ellery Five Ways boutique in Paddington which was incredible. I really love this concept, it brings the worlds of fashion and art together and that is what I am all about.
GERTRUDE & ALICE BOOKSTORE My new favourite place for a chai and some peace and quiet, I never leave empty-handed. I picked up a $5 Picasso art book on sale there the other day and today I bought Rupi Kaur’s new poetry book titled ‘the sun and her flowers’. I was in a bad mood until I read it, it changed my perspective and made me more aware of my actions and my choices. It may not do the exact same for you but I promise it will move you in some way.
ZUCCHINI PASTA WITH MY NEW SPIRALIZER
I am like a kid in a candy store in my kitchen with this dream contraption. I know this is not a new fad or anything but it’s new to me and I am having a bloody GREAT time with it. Cooking made fun! I wind it around and slow dance to my jazz records at the same time.
THE BARBARA HEPWORTH DOCUMENTARY ON NOWNESS Pretty much any documentary from Nowness but this one is like a little meditation for me. I have watched it almost every day for weeks. She lives my dream life, this documentary is literally my dream. Can I please just be her?
