We’re all about expanding our creative community, what better way to break down some walls than to share some everyday routines and pearls of wisdom from special people we admire. This week we have a chat to the lovely photographer, and Smack Bang fave, Alex Carlyle…
WHAT DO YOU CALL ‘WORK’?
For me ‘work’ constitutes travelling around Sydney (and sometimes further) to varying photography jobs week to week, and then twice that amount of time at my desk editing said photos!
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO EVERY MORNING?
Sadly, it’s probably check Instagram. Next to that, lemon and ginger tea!
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT’S THE BEST TIME OF DAY?
Oh that’s a hard question for a photographer – I personally like all times of the day, but there is something special about the early morning, before or at sunrise – no matter what the day actually holds, this time of day always feels like I’m off to the airport for a holiday. From a photography perspective it would have to be ‘golden hour’ (the hour before the sun goes behind the horizon)
DO YOU HAVE ANY SUNDAY EVENING RITUALS BEFORE THE WEEK STARTS?
Being a freelancer and a wedding photographer means often the weekends are the beginning of my work week. I do always go to my church on Sunday night, and then grab dinner with friends or (lately) watch the next episode of ‘Making a Murderer’ with my boyfriend Jake.
COCKTAIL OF CHOICE?
Cocktail? I’m a gin and tonic girl – the dryer the drink, the more I like it.
WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF WORK/LIFE BALANCE?
I’m still working on that one, let’s just say there needs to be plenty of room for lunch/coffee break. I try not to do work past 6pm – dedicate that to quality time with Jake and my family.
EXPLAIN YOUR IDEAL DAY
Some of my favourite days are the ones where Jake makes me get up before 6am. We pack up the car, drive to our favourite coffee spot and head either up or down the coast for an adventure. He finds some good surf, and I settle on the beach with a book. An ideal day for me always includes eating good food, so thats a given, and then we make it home in time to catch a movie at the cinema (where we take dinner in and eat it during the movie and feel sorry for everyone who is just eating popcorn.)
EARLY BIRD OR NIGHT OWL? WHY?
Night owl for sure, but with Jake’s help I can be both. Night owl because I have to force myself to go to bed before midnight – I really enjoy the winding down at the end of the day consciously relaxing rather than actually sleeping.
DO YOU EVER FEEL THE WORK/HOME LINES BLUR?
Definitely, because I have ‘home’ office, I sometimes catch myself working into the evening or replying to an email while sitting in bed with a cup of tea. These are disciplines I want to learn – any tips?
YOU’VE GOT A COFFEE DATE WITH YOUR 20 YEAR OLD SELF, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM?
I would tell them not to worry what anyone else thinks, be confident and don’t hide behind your camera – no one is actually judging you. You are your worst critic, so stop thinking and just do! I would say “move out of home ASAP!” and take a lot of holidays. I would tell her that feelings of “embarrassment”, “indecisiveness” or “obligation” are a waste of precious time.
