Meet Nicole Stubbs, owner of Bronte based oasis, Tribe Beauty as we sit down for a cuppa and talk about all things business and beauty.

  1. WHAT GETS YOU OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING?
I’m prone to severe ‘sunrise FOMO’, so tend to jump out of bed each morning to make sure I get a glimpse of it! A couple of mornings a week, I catch a great group of friends at the beach for a run and a swim, other days I’ll do yoga or stroll around the park. In any case, that connection with nature is an essential moment to set me up for the day ahead.I tend to give a lot of myself to my clients during treatments, so I find it really important to take time in the morning to connect with nature, feel grounded and take note of the world around me.
  2. WINE OR TEA?
I really like tea! Fresh lemon and ginger tea in the morning, a fresh pot for clients to sip on throughout the day, a nice mint after dinner and a licorice blend before bed. I find tea calming and energising all at once.I am excited to be working with Kate from Mayde Tea in Byron to create our own Tribe tea at the moment. We’ve just tasted the second batch and it is fantastic! I can’t wait to have it complete for Summer. But then, a good meal without wine just seems like such a tragedy!

  1. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN THE JOURNEY OF TRIBE BEAUTY?
I’ve been fortunate to have traveled widely working in beauty and health over the last ten years which has afforded me the opportunity to think about how I could bring those experiences together back home. Having worked in high-end boutiques in London before traveling as a full-time private therapist aboard private yachts, I was able to understand the height of luxury and the demands of such clients. This work had a focus on the ‘finest’ materials and experiences though often had little regard to the origin or story of the products and tended to have a certain stuffy aesthetic. Returning to Sydney and living by the beach, I saw the opportunity to harness Australia’s natural zest for health and beautiful natural products and combining that with a new level of luxury delivered in a clean, fresh way. That was the inspiration and Tribe has been the journey of the past two years!
  2. THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
    Saltwater
    Great music
The chocolate treats at Orchard street!

My next mission is to open Tribe on Mars in 2023. I’m thinking a great sunscreen will be popular.”

  1. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MISSION WITH YOUR BUSINESS?
Fundamentally, my mission is to harness the energy of Australia’s natural beauty and deliver experiences in a way which reflect my values; approachable, sincere and personalised. To celebrate our outdoor lifestyle and work with clients to tailor beauty and health solutions to support their lives.Of late, my mission has been to gather a tribe of like-minded men and women who can become friends as well as customers. I am fortunate in Bronte to be surrounded by some great, like-minded businesses who have supported this mission and I’m excited to be broadening Tribe to partners in New Zealand, Denmark, Morocco & Los Angeles. My next mission is to open Tribe on Mars in 2023. I’m thinking a great sunscreen will be popular.
  2. WALK US THROUGH YOUR WORKSPACE AND AESTHETICS
Natural light, fresh air, greenery, beautiful scents, calm vibe, good music, even the right temperature… it’s all important! We have worked hard to ensure that Tribe feels like a space where you needn’t worry about anything. All of these aspects are important and I’ve been lucky to work with some incredibly talented people to bring it together. Tribe’s initial aesthetic has been really paired back, with natural materials and a light breezy feel. I am thrilled to be working with a wonderful designer at the moment, remodeling the space with a slightly bolder look. We have worked together to find beautiful pieces of furniture from all around the world and I can’t wait to see it all come to life.A couple of times each week I visit Maria at Samambaia Flowers and talk plants. She is a truly creative woman and has become a great friend and client. Together we select flowers and plants for the space, tending toward native Australian species with strong colours offsetting the light airy space.

  1. FAVOURITE TUNES TO WORK TO?
I have two distinct modes; working with clients and working on the business. For clients, I love contemporary takes on traditional meditation music. I find that it allows that beautiful ‘semi-sleep’ state for facials and enables clients to really sink into the treatments and get the most out of the experience. When I am working on the business and developing ideas or strategy, I turn it up a little bit… This week I’ve had Bonobo and Tora on repeat, with Winston Surfshirt creeping in when a glass of rosé appears in hand!
  2. IF THIS BUSINESS DIDN’T EXIST, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
I’ve always been fascinated by beauty and wellness. Even as an 8-year-old, my best friend Jess and I would escape into the national park behind our home to pick flowers and soak them in water to make perfume! If Tribe didn’t exist, I suspect I’d still find a way to bring natural beauty to the world somehow!
  3. DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY
Tribe is an interesting business in that I know exactly what I am going to do for most of the day – I am lucky to be booked out weeks in advance so I tend to run like clockwork for those hours. Outside of this, I can be a little more creative! Most mornings will involve lemon & ginger tea, a run or swim at Bondi or Centennial Park and a breakky smoothie with Elle Macpherson’s super elixir protein. After a morning of treatments, I try to sneak out for lunch and an orchard street treat in the sun, before heading back to Tribe and generally working through until about 8.On days where I finish a little earlier, I’ll take some time to work on the business and connect with collaborators, creators, and suppliers thinking about the next idea!I love to end the day as I start; with a hot tea and a nice hot shower.
  4. FAVOURITE PRODUCT AT THE MOMENT?
Nucifera, It’s a multi-use balm. I love how versatile it is but have especially needed it coming out of winter and rehydrating the skin on my body. You can use it as a cleanser, moisturiser, cuticle oil, deodorant and lip balm!
