What Makes a Good Website?

What Makes a Good Website?
  1. SPEED
The thing about speed is that people only notice it when it’s absent. The world is in a hurry. Don’t let your website be that annoying old dude dawdling on a busy street. Optimized graphics, video and audio give a website the necessary speed it needs to load fast. Users don’t want to wait for slow content to download; they need their information quickly and without delay.
  2. CONTENT
Writing for the web is vastly different from writing for print. Again, the world is in a hurry, people skim online, searching for the key points and ignoring flowery waffle. Content should be short, sweet and organized. You’ve got less than 10 seconds to hook your visitors, so grab their attention by being clear, concise and compelling. I’d also recommend updating your content regularly – Dead or static content will not bring visitors back to your site! And lastly, consider a pro. Unless you’re an especially good writer, consider using a copywriter to write or edit your content. They’ll be able to make it more SEO friendly as well, knowing which keywords to feature to help move you up the ranks in search engines.
  3. NAVIGATION + USABILITY
Take the user on a journey, show them the way. If a user gets lost on your website they generally don’t ask a local for directions, they leave. Navigation on your website is what gets readers around on the page and the site, make sure this is a simple, easy process that is spelt out loud and clear. Limit your menu items to 8 or less. Remember, the world is in a hurry – don’t make people hunt for information.
  4. QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHY
Invest in quality photography. You don’t need loads of photos, but make sure the few that you use are of a high standard and reflect the essence of your brand. High quality product images are especially important for online retailers, your pictures are what will sell your product.
  5. SIMPLICITY
Keep it simple, stupid! Allow for adequate white space and don’t overload your site with ridiculously complex design, animation, or special effects that may cause head spins. Uncluttered layouts allow viewers to focus on your message. The best way to keep visitors glued to their screen is through valuable content, good organization and amazing design. Keep your site simple and well organised.
  6. CONSISTENT LAYOUT
Site layout is extremely important for usability. Use a consistent layout and repeat certain elements throughout the site so that your visitor feels comfortable and at ease on each different page. Your website should be organized in a consistent manner, you don’t want to make your visitors feel like journeying through your site is a chore.
  7. RESPONSIVE
Over 20% of google searches are being performed on a mobile device or tablet. More now than ever, is important to ensure that your website is optimised for smaller screens. A responsive site basically means that no matter what size screen someone is viewing your website it will display properly for that screen size. Having a mobile website is no longer a simply a nice feature or luxury, it is absolutely necessary.
  8. SEO FRIENDLY
An awesome website with no visitors may as well be a dog’s breakfast website. SEO (search engine optimization) allows your audience to find your site through search engines like Google or Bing. It is not just about attracting a generic audience, it is about dangling the carrot in front of potential customers that will appreciate and pay for your amazing services.
